The Case for Stableford, Part 15

Q. So if you’re “collecting” points, what’s a good score?

This is a common question.

What’s a good score for the Detroit Lions? Lions fans might say any score that wins the game. The same is true for Stableford, but that of course requires a human opponent. We don’t always have one of those.

Q. So what’s a good score when you don’t have an opponent?

You get a point for a bogey, so getting 18 points means you played bogey golf. Not a humiliating score, especially if one is playing real golf, with penatlies, rolling every putt, etc.

You get two points for a par, so scoring 36 is really, really good.

And of course if you carry an index, all of the above would be netted up or down. So 36 isn’t as unreachable as it might sound. But a good round is often in the twenties, especially if you get a lot of crooked numbers along the way.

Q. So what’s your best score?

34 points, net my index. On that day I had no opponent, but it definitely felt like a enough to win the game.

A bad day? Well, 0 means everything went high, you were shut out. In stroke terms that’s a “radio station” score: 108.5 FM “Unsmooth Jazz.”
